In the past, the only way to address the fine lines and wrinkles that develop on the face with age was with plastic surgery. Facelifts are invasive procedures that are often not a viable solution for patients with mild to moderate signs of aging. Years ago, injectables became a wonderful alternative to traditional surgeries, and continue to grow in popularity. Dr. Kenneth Beer of Beer Dermatology in West Palm Beach, FL, is available to help patients in the area learn more about solutions such as injectables. He also offers one of the newest injections available today called Jeuveau. Jeuveau is not a hyaluronic acid filler like many other cosmetic injectables. Instead, this cost-effective treatment works differently. It is injected into the muscles of the face, providing the benefit of smoother skin and reduced wrinkles and folds.
Jeuveau is a neurotoxin, similar to other available injections such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. This particular injection was approved by the FDA in 2019 and is produced by a company called Evolus. This injectable cosmetic treatment is best indicated for the glabellar lines, which are sometimes known as frown lines or the “elevens” between the eyebrows. When Jeuveau is injected into the muscles between the eyebrows, it relaxes them, in turn relaxing the dynamic wrinkles that develop in that same treatment area.
Since neurotoxins such as Jeuveau are effective at treating dynamic wrinkles, they are best used in areas of the face where muscle contractions contribute to aging skin. This may include the areas around the eyes, where lines called “crow’s feet” develop, or on the forehead where forehead folds might show when patients raise or lower their eyebrows. This is where neurotoxins work best.
Most patients who want to maintain the results of Jeuveau will often work with their dermatologist to decide on a good schedule for return injections. For many of our individuals, three to four visits a year will often suffice in keeping the results in place over an extended period. While we cannot stop the signs of aging, cosmetic injectables can help in slowing them if they are continued.
Our doctors have steady hands and precision injections to ensure patients are as comfortable as possible during their appointments. Most will feel a slight pinch when the injection is administered, but this is often well-tolerated. Patients are also given aftercare instructions and are warned of possible side effects that might occur after treatment and remain for a few days, including redness and tenderness at the injection sites. Side effects are rare and short-term if they do occur.
