Winter Skin-Care Tips Martha Stewart Show, December 2010

The Martha Stewart Show

Martha Stewart: The winter months can be very hard on our skin. Proper care and great products will ensure that your skin stays beautiful even during the harshest of weathers and here to tell us more is Dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Beer from Florida, please welcome Dr. Beer!

Dr. Beer: Thank you

Martha Stewart: Now I just loved meeting you the last time you were on the show and I really heeded what you said and I have been using you products and they are fantastic.

Dr. Beer: Thank you

Martha Stewart: Really fantastic, especially this. I love this serum. The intensive repair serum, and you have new things to show us!

Dr. Beer: We do we have some new toys.

Martha Stewart: So you are going to share tips for taking care of your skin during these cold dry winter months.

Dr. Beer: Right

Martha Stewart: And it may not seem dry, but in your house with the heat on it is certainly dry right?

Dr. Beer: Absolutely.

Martha Stewart: And do you suggest using a humidifier?

Dr. Beer: One of the best things to do is to actually use a humidifier and that way when you sleep in the room instead of spending the night drying out, you are gaining moisture and you don’t wake up dry and parched.

Martha Stewart: What is a good temperature to sleep in?

Dr. Beer: I like about 70 to 72.

Martha Stewart: Okay, not hotter?

Dr. Beer: No not hotter.

Martha Stewart: Some places are so hot!

Dr. Beer: And that is a problem particularly during Christmas when you are travelling or anytime during the new year you stay in a hotel and it is dry, some of them now have humidifiers so you can put in some water and put it on.

Martha Stewart: specially in ski areas, they do give you a humidifier now.

Dr. Beer: Exactly

Martha Stewart: Which is very nice or at least ask for only if you don’t have one.

Dr. Beer: Exactly always use that.

Martha Stewart: And you have several tips regarding moisturizing. What are the new products that you are using for moisture?

Dr. Beer: Well the newest products that we are using are the Theraplex line of products and then we have this B5 serum which is also phenomenal so the tips that I have are to use moisturizers more. So try and use morning noon and night, instead of using something 2 or 3 times a week which you can in the summer try and use it 2 or 3 times during the day.

Martha Stewart: Well shouldn’t women use moisturizers all the time anyway?

Dr. Beer: Usually, particularly for their arms, their legs their face areas, they tend to dry out even in the summer months. It is really important.

Martha Stewart: Ok now you recommend that women change their routines. I do it all the time, I am constantly using stuff that I use on my face, one week on my feet and legs the next week, just to try and see if it is going to make a difference, and it does! I mean sometimes the reaction is really good, sometimes it is not so good.

Dr. Beer: Alright! But you have to be careful, especially on your face. Absolutely, but it is a great idea to change. So if you are using something in the summer months when it is humid out and your skin tends to be oily, don’t stick with that during the winter months and during the winter months you will be more sensitive. Try and use more bland products. So lower fragrance, lower acid lower active ingredients and try and use things that will help keep your skin moist and humid and not irritated.

Martha Stewart: Well what I like about yours is that it does not have any fragrance I mean it is just like so pure ad so good so you bought some of these products and I guess whichever you are going to tell us about them.

Dr. Beer: Well, let start with this, the Skin-ceutical B5 serum has hyaluronic acid which is great for moisturizing and then it has the B5 which is a vitamin that helps the skin heal. So you can’t go wrong with that.

I have been using that for a couple of months now, and I love it.

Dr. Beer: It’s great, and it is reasonably priced and I think it is one of the things that you can do that can really help your skin specially during the winter months. The next is Theraplex.

Martha Stewart: Now this I don’t know.

Dr. Beer: Theraplex is a very small skin care company, their products contain petrolatum which is the active ingredient that you see in Vaseline. It is just a great barrier so it seals the skin.

Martha Stewart: Oh okay

Dr. Beer: The humidity-

Martha Stewart: Fragrant free hypo allergenic, I love that.

Dr. Beer: Right, so you can use it even if you have eczema it I actually approved for anybody that has a fragrant sensitivity, it is just a great product and it is great at sealing the moisture in. So if you get out of the shower or the bath and your skin is still wet,

Martha Stewart: So it is a real lotion?

Dr. Beer: That one is, yeah – it is a very good.

Martha Stewart: Good for hands, my hands take such a beating.

Dr. Beer: Well there is another one called Theraplex emollient and that is great for the hands and also the cuticles and the nails, so that is a really reasonably priced product.

Martha Stewart: So this is for the whole body and this is for after showering in the evening.

Dr. Beer: Right, that is a very light lotion it is designed for when you are out of the shower or the bath and it will help keep the skin moist.

Martha Stewart: I get no smell, I love no smell!

Dr. Beer: Right

Martha Stewart: So that’s good, so slather all over you.

Dr. Beer: All over.

Martha Stewart: Ok, and then we come to your products.

Dr. Beer: My products of course,

Martha Stewart: Now you have been developing and developing for how long?

Dr. Beer: Well it has been 5 years that we have been in the production process of this.

Martha Stewart: This is new!

Dr. Beer: It is new, it is a neck sculpting cream.

Martha Stewart: Neck sculpting!

Dr. Beer: We put it a botanical extract that helps firm the neck and just repair the skin there and it is a great product for firing up the heck area!

Martha Stewart: I agree!

Dr. Beer: The neck is an undertreated area but everybody that comes into the office, once we clean up their face, they frequently have questions or concerns about their neck so we came out with a neck sculpting cream.

Martha Stewart: What do you mean clean up their face? He does magic to people’s faces by the way!

Dr. Beer: Thank you!

Martha Stewart: Not that I personally, I am going down to get a trip to palm beach!

Dr. Beer: Love to see you there!

Martha Stewart: One of these days

Dr. Beer: We could treat a lot of people with all kinds of things from just routine facial irritation which is another problem we see in the winter, to people that require cosmetic rejuvenation and that is really the fun part, is facial sculpting.

Martha Stewart: And so many articles now are talking about noninvasive face lifts, no surgery.

Dr. Beer: It is wonderful!

Martha Stewart: And you are doing- and great inroads have been made into this, haven’t hey?

Dr. Beer: The products have gotten so much better the techniques are better, so we can now lift the face and contour it in ways that were not available 5 years ago.

Martha Stewart: Fantastic, now we can take some questions from the audience, I am sure if you are interested – oh yeah we have some good questions I am sure. Hi!

Speaker 1: Hi my name is Christina from Rhode Island, and you just spoke of moisturizing and I am wondering if you have acne prone skin do you recommend moisturize as frequently or less frequently?

Dr. Beer: It is really an individual thing, a lot of acne prone skin is still dry so I recommend moisturizing 2 or 3 times a day, but finding a moisturizer that is non Comedogenic or non Acengenic and there are so may great products that are available and it is easy to find them. The main thing is to find something that is not going to break you out.

Spearker1: Thank you!

Martha Stewart: Well I wish we had time for a lot more questions because you know having you here, the expert – is really important!

Dr. Beer: Thank you

*audience applause*

Martha Stewart: Thank you very much for vising with us again and for everyone in our audience, you will be happy to know that you are going to go home with all of these products that we spoke of today!

*audience cheer*

Martha Stewart: Try them out and let us know what you think.

Juvederm Voluma™XC gets FDA Approval! Channel 10 WPLG

Live from WPLG local ten news starts right now.

Now also in today’s health news, a new option for looking younger – who doesn’t want that! The food and drug administration recently gave approval to a new product. It’s called Voluma XC, it is the first filler to receive FDA approval for correcting age related volume loss in the cheek area.

Dr. Kenneth Beer – Normally as we age the middle third of the face is where everything sinks in and drops so by using Voluma to correct that we can really improve the appearance of the face and perform an injectable facelift.

Now Dr. Kenneth Beer who actually took part in the clinical trials right here in South Florida for Voluma, says it does have the potential to last up to 2 years which is also good news! The fountain of youth, they found it in a needle! Right here (laughs) Alright Christy thanks a lot.

iPad Rash Channel 5 WPTV
Can you get a nickel allergy from your Ipad? Dr. Beer discusses the possibilities.

Interviewer: Here on Health Alert, a lot of us use an Ipad on a regular basis but what you may not know is that it can contain nickel, one of the most common allergy inducing metals. According to the associated press nickel allergies in children appear to be on the rise with 25 percent of those receiving skin tests, testing positive for nickel allergies up from 17 percent a decade ago. Dr. Kenneth Beer is a dermatologist from the Good Samaritan Medical Centre; he is here to help shed more light on this. Dr. Beer thanks for joining us today.

Dr. Beer: Thanks for having me.

Interviewer: Tell us a little bit more about this, have you seen a lot of cases locally?

Dr. Beer: Not from the Ipad yet but we see an awful lot of nickel allergy because nickel is in everything and it is a very common source of allergen inducing products.

Interviewer: You mentioned people that work out, often get nickel allergies. What are some other?

Dr. Beer: We see it in people that handle a lot of metals so people that work with silver wear a lot, people that are exposed to even things like surgical instruments, so we have seen a lot of allergies to nickel in a variety of different people and it is almost always people that touch metal frequently.

Interviewer: Let’s talk about the Ipad right here. This is the nickel coming from the backside of the Ipad. How often would you have to touch this to get that allergy?

Dr. Beer: Well you probably have to hold it for long amounts of time on an ongoing basis, so probably daily and if you are playing games or watching movies, it is not uncommon. I have seen my kids hold it for an hour or two at a clip for days at a time so you know I can see where this could be a problem.

Interviewer: And this is not just linked to children? As we mentioned earlier this can be adults as well right?

Dr. Beer: Right I mean we see it in adults too and a lot of my patients are reading the newspaper, watching TV and are doing everything on their Ipad now so it is not going to take long for this to be more widespread this is probably the tip of the iceberg.

Interviewer: and what are some symptoms?

Dr. Beer: Itching, a lot of itching, redness little blisters. Lot of times we see nickel allergies as just an allergic contact dermatitis. Sometimes it can manifest all over the body when the skin gets really angry or irritated you can get rashes everywhere and sometimes it is hard to find sometimes we even see it in people who ingest small amounts of nickel but in general itching, redness and little blisters.

Interviewer: and probably the most important thing – how can we prevent this because we use these devices all the time. So many of us have them in our home.

Dr. Beer: Well I think this is a great example when you have the little carriers around the metal it will block a lot of the metal exposure, washing your hands after touching the metal is a great idea and then just limiting the amounts of time that you play with these things if you are sweating a lot or if you are in a warm environment, try minimizing the contact with this.

Interviewer: alight, Dr. Kenneth Beer from Good Samaritan medical center, Sir thank you very much for shedding some light.

Dr. Beer: It’s my pleasure, thanks for having me.

Interviewer: Appreciate that, Kelly back to you.

Protecting your skin from the sun Channel 25 WPBF
Protecting your skin from the sun Channel 25 WPBF

Interviewer: Alright Stephanie thank you! On this medical alert day we are talking about the sun and we all know the sun can be very dangerous and we really have to worry about taking care of our skin especially right here in South Florida. Joining me now is Dr. Kenneth Beer of Good Samaritan Medical Centre, Dr. Beer thanks so much for joining us. Now you and I were chatting a little bit about sun alert day and I said I know you have to avoid the sun and you said listen that is not necessarily the case!

Dr. Beer: That’s right, I think that moderation is the key and I think especially when you are a little bit older you can get some sun just don’t burn, wear sun protection but it is good for people to get out it is good for you to have some exposure to the outdoors for a whole lot of reasons.

Interviewer: And tell me a little bit about something’s you see in your office, Melanoma I know is popping up all over. I was saying I went to a doctor’s office the other day and everybody had a little patch on them, because they had something cut off. What do you want people to know?

Dr. Beer: So we want people to know that number one anytime you see something changing whether it is itching, growing or bleeding we want you to see your dermatologist and always if something is being different on your body point it out to your dermatologist so that he or she can take a biopsy.

Interviewer: Mhmm

Dr. Beer: We want you to come in at least once a year, and go head to toe. The dermatology office is not the place to be shy. Take everything off if you want to see a male, if you want to see a female see a female, but don’t be shy. Try and get your whole body looked at and point out anything that is of concern to you.

Interviewer: I always think that if you have something funny on your face or your arms but I have heard that even between your toes is a place that people look.

Dr. Beer: That is a great point we try and get people to take their shoes and socks off, we try and look between everybody’s toe and we find stuff there, all though it is very infrequent but the toes and the hands the bottoms of the feet also places you can get skin cancer, so although everybody checks the face and the arms you know there are a lot of others places. The scalp, the feet, the fingers between the toes, so we want you to come in at least once a year and go entirely head to toe.

Interviewer: And definitely sun block, do you have any advice out there as to what we need as far as sun block and you are also saying when it comes to products to make your skin tighter and you know firmer.

Dr. Beer: So that is a great point. What I recommend is before you are 21 or 18 wear high protection and even thereafter, but for my kids I like them in 60 70 80

Interviewer: okay

Dr. Beer: I like products that are only sun protection. I don’t like the products that are a daily moisturizer, a daily hydrator or an anti-oxidant because they try and do everything and they do nothing well.

Interviewer: Gotcha.

Dr. Beer: So by a specific anti-oxidant, buy a specific sun protection product and make sure it is UVA or UVB – reapply it and try and buy a product that is a well-known brand.

Interviewer: Alright good advice! Thank you Dr. Beer for joining us, we appreciate it. Steph, we’ll send things over to you!
